Abstract

An examination of possible moves in a dialogue motivates the distinction between two pairs of argumentative dimensions (subjective/objective and structural/procedural). During the course of a dialogue, the argumentation can be "linear" or "retroflexive" (i.e. modifying the employed theoretical contents). Dialectical thinking in argumentation theory becomes important here. The main application of the retroflexive argument structure is the pro and con discussion that is explained and illustrated in contrast with the "conductive argument" (Govier, Wellmann).
